gFam.live is shutting down

Hi everyone!

So, some sad news, but we're shutting gFam.live down.
For those that don't know, gFam.live was an attempt at social media designed to help creators earn from their content either through Web Monetization or Advertisement Revenue Share.

We've been on this journey since 2019, it's been super fun and we've each learnt a lot - but unfortunately we got to a size where our monthly costs increased dramatically but the advertising revenue only increased slightly.

We've had some technical database issues recently so I don't have exact numbers, but we've provided over $185,570 USD worth of Web Monetization and XRP tips to creators for their content which has been viewed over 282 thousand times by 86 thousand people in 149 different countries.

Posting was limited to one post per day, but one thing we really enjoyed was people posting a little story and photo about their day each day... the kinds of things that might not be special enough to post on traditional social media, but all those stories on hundreds of thousands of posts showed us both how different life was for many people all over the world and how similar our hopes and dreams really are. It was incredible to witness.

One of the lessons we'll take away was that it was really difficult to get sponsors or advertisers, and I think it was because the content was too broad, my next project (that I hope to also incorporate Interledger Payments and Web Monetization) will be a lot more niche. I'm hoping that may help securing advertisers and paying subscribers.

Thank you to everyone in the Interledger community that helped out, we really appreciate everything you've supported us with. I personally (Adam) will still be in the Interledger Slack channels and testing Web Monetization and all the things.

I've been super, super busy moving house the last couple of months (it has been such a mission) but I'm all settled and ready to work on Web Monetization funness again. Every month I do a progress report so you can get an idea of what is working for gFam and what isn't... and hopefully this can help your own projects.

Hi everyone!

For those that don't know, gFam.live is a social media platform that did have Web Monetization enabled, and is looking forward to implementing it again.

Without Web Monetization, we've set up Google Adsense and provided 100% of the advertising revenue to the creators that post on gFam... and in the last month Google has thrown up way more advertisements on the site, they are super, super annoying now... and this report goes into the earnings from that (spoiler : it's nowhere enough for the amount of annoyance it causes).

Super excited about everything happening in the Interledger ecosystem lately... as you'll be able to see in this report, banner advertising has just not been working out for the creators in the gFam community.

We're still working with DreemPort.com to see if we can drive more traffic to our community's posts and tutorials in order to generate more advertising revenue to be shared amongst all creators.

We'll be looking to create tutorials and posts on projects within the Interledger ecosystem, so we hope to connect with you and help build up your communities too.

Hi everyone!

My main job at the moment is letting everyone on all the social medias know about gFam. Until Browser Payments and/or Web Monetization is back up and running, we're distributing 100% of gFam.live's revenue from advertisements to our creators.

We've joined so many social media platforms; Threads, Instagram, X-Twitter, Mastodon, Post.News, YouTube & Pinterest to find new community members, and this progress report shows our analytics and metrics for each. We haven't been great at most of them, but Threads by Meta has been a surprise.

We're on the hunt for two kinds of people...

1.) Content consumers that enjoy connecting with people all over the world and learning about the good and bad parts of people's day.

2.) Content creators that want to build a supportive audience, build up their content and help bring traffic to gFam.live while getting their share of the advertising revenue.

We know there are lots of people out there that fit into either or both categories, but we are finding it hard... we're essentially onboarding people one friend group at a time.

Hi everyone!

We are now distributing 100% of our advertising revenue generated by the posts on gFam.live to the creators creating those posts.

We have never, ever, ever been a fan of advertising, so it's totally hurting our heart to have to rely on it to generate an income for our creators, but we've tried to make it as non-intrusive as possible... but we'll be very keen to incorporate web monetization again once all the technology pieces are available.

Hi everyone!

We've disabled our Coil.com related code but all our Web Monetization is still active and ready for whatever the future brings in this space. Really excited to see what comes from Web Monetization development (add yourself to the waitlist!).

In the meantime, we've changed our methodology and we're proud to report that we're now tipping creators 100% of the advertising revenue from gFam.live based on their contributions to both traffic and community.

If you think you should be paid fairly for your efforts, then gFam.live is the place for you.
