Goals that Make Me Smile in my New Role as an ILF Community Ambassador

Feeling rather fortunate to be continuing to share my passions for building financial equity and sustainable funding solutions for digital creatives, the Web Monetization Standard, and Interledger, now as an Interledger Foundation Community Ambassador.

Ambassadorship Goals

My goals as an ILF Community Ambassador include:

outreach and education on the Web Monetization Standard and Interledger Protocol to the disability communities and First Nations communities
onboarding of disability communities and First Nations communities to utilising the Web Monetization Standard and exploring open payments through the Interledger network
outreach and education of digital creative communities on the Web Monetization Standard and exploring open payments through the Interledger network
onboarding of digital creative communities to utilising the Web Monetization Standard and exploring open payments through the Interledger network
increasing the knowledge and exposure of ways that people can Web Monetize their digital assets, the Web Monetized tools and platforms that exist, and the Web Monetize projects that people can peruse and engage with
creating spaces for people to experiment with Coil's tipping feature and to discuss and explore community building incentives

Ambassadorship Deliverables

Some of the ways that I will be doing this, include:

creating introductory overview / 'how to' videos and blog posts on different Web Monetized platforms and tools
editing and sharing the Web Monetized Podcast recorded at MozFest to different audio and video platforms, including Free Music Archive
building asynchronous online course materials on the Web Monetization Standard and ILP enabled open payments to some more mainstream online course platforms
sharing the above materials in a variety of niche communities that target the groups mentioned in my goals above
hosting synchronous overview and tutorial sessions with groups mentioned in my goals above
curating Web Monetized galleries and hosting tipping parties for groups that we are onboarding
creating a network of Web Monetized galleries, with accompanying lower bandwidth 'program guides' to feature the ever growing array of Web Monetized projects and resources that are available to peruse
updating and adding to the Web Monetization Libraries on StoryToGo from the projects in the Web Monetized galleries

On May 17, the Interledger Foundation announced its third Call For Proposal (CFP) since launching almost two years ago. For our friends that have been along with us on this journey since the beginning, you'll notice that this Call is quite different from our earlier iterations. When we first started our grantmaking in 2019, our inaugural CFP was open to just about anyone interested in experimenting with the Interledger Protocol. There was a healthy mix of developers and content creators working on projects that ranged from web monetized content, code repositories, and new platforms experimenting with new business models for the web. From our initial cohort of grantees and subsequent calls afterwards, we were able to garner gems for improvement each time. Through our feedback mechanisms imbedded in the grantmaking process, we have been able to determine which aspects of the Protocol our community is excited about, and some of the barriers and pain points to entry that needs to be eased. So we've made the decision to build the foundational aspects and improve the Interledger Protocol to improve access to the network.

When things went digital, so did reading. Kindles and Kobos could be spotted replacing newspapers on train commutes, and iPads made digital paper feel glossier than a magazine.

Instead of print, we began reading and subscribing to publications through Apple Books, or bought one-off issues of The Telegraph through the Kindle Store - maybe that's what normalised buying digital newspapers.

It's not just the Kindle Store acting as a premium news stand, but also Search Engines like Google

These mediums were a natural progression from paper, and more importantly, their marketplace counterparts became an extra magazine stand and newsagent. Apple, Amazon, Kobo, and a handful of other digital book stores became a new set of new shelves, and a primary distributor for digital content - that is until paywalls on the web.

Project Update
For our second grant, the Mysilio team has been working with Dr. Antara Haldar to create Limen, a digital knowledge commons combining research across disciplines into a single web-monetized site for citizens, academics, policy makers, and activists. The goals of Limen are to provide both an interdisciplinary public knowledge base of cutting edge policy research, as well as a test bed for economists and technologists to experiment with new passive monetization strategies like Web Monetization. Over the last few months, we’ve been hard at work on the initial design, discovery, and strategy work with Dr. Haldar to determine how Limen site will function, what initial data to publish, and who will serve as the initial contributors to the site. We hope this model may eventually provide an open alternative to paywalled providers like LexisNexis and the current academic publishing ecosystem.
The site we’ve designed will consist of a community of three key stakeholder classes: Editors, Researchers, and Contributors.

Editors refer to professors and other senior academics who already have strong academic reputations, and perhaps their own datasets, papers, and knowledge to publish. They will be charged with curating the knowledge commons, and deciding which contributions to feature.

Researchers refer to graduate students and other researchers who will help curate and discuss research. They will form the bulk of the social participants of the platform, and will be the primary participants in the many of the monetization experiments we hope to run.

Contributors refer to non-academics who will be able to take a variety of qualitative quizzes and assessments, and have their responses recorded in shared datasets managed by the Limen project. This will allow Editors and Researchers to solicit input from the general public in an academically rigorous manner.

Project Update
PeerPay ("Payment system for one billion people") already has its first Web version (https://peerpayapp.com/), available for any user to try. Not only is this its first version, but it also includes a lot of feedback that the tremendous Interledger community and Grant for the Web have given us.
We are in the middle of the project, with a lot of learning, with many challenges ahead and with tremendous opportunities that we are working on.
Progress on objectives
The proposed objectives for this year in PeerPay are:

Web development as MVP: It is ready and functional with test accounts (ILP accounts). Accessible at https://peerpayapp.com/

Localization: Thanks to the feedback from the community, we realized the importance that PeerPay was not only in Spanish, so it can also be used in English and Portuguese.

API development: The architecture is ready and the team is working on refining the last details to publish the API and allow the development of new products for builders.

Communication and marketing strategy: We developed a strategic plan that includes alliances with other protocols and blockchain to participate in PeerPay. It also includes financial entities (which we are now going to talk to some of them taking advantage of the ready MVP) and exposure of PeerPay to entrepreneurs to test the functionalities and understand how they are used to adjust the platform.

gFam.live aims to introduce new storytellers into the web monetization community with its social media posts, and now new functionality called gFam Learn will attempt to enable teachers to earn directly from students via web monetization and/or tips.

Adam Waring will present the gFam Learn functionality and answer any questions you might have on the processes or technology. As far as we're aware there is no capacity or platform online for teachers to earn per lesson or for students to unlock and pay for just the lessons they're interested in. With gFam Learn, lessons can be visible to everyone and tips/microtransactions are provided as a bonus or lessons can be gated and unlocked by either Coil Subscribers or by a specified amount of XRP via the XUMM wallet.

I wanted to update the community on the launch 🥳 of a site with Web Monetization support that I've been working on called Monetized.
Monetized allows you to create premium sections that are only accessible by Web Monetization users. These payment gates could be used to wrap around existing content to create paywalls without needing to write any code.
Monetized makes a "monetized link" out of your existing web content. This link is like a tiny url + paywall combination that can be un-gated with Web Monetization.
I'd love to hear what you all think and what we should build next with it. Thanks! 😀

I wondered if anyone has suggestions for bringing web monetization perks into newsletters?
I send a newsletter with Prototypr, and it could be cool to remove ads for those users who use a WM provider like coil. After testing, I found the web monetization meta tag does not work in emails (tried outlook and gmail).
Does anyone know if this could become possible one day, or any ideas for bringing WM benefits into a newsletter?

Erika’s project, Central PA Info Hub, recently renamed the 11/30 Youth Collaborative, is a youth-driven first-person storytelling project that showcases the voices and stories of individuals who call Chambersburg, PA home, presenting a fuller picture of the community for the community. The project aims to support the development of first-person narratives, particularly among young, marginalized individuals.

This week the Interledger Foundation announced a new call for proposals for ILP-based financial services.
In continued service of our mission, and learning from our Grant for the Web program, we are excited to announce the next open Call For Proposals (CFP) to target the creation of more financial nodes in the Interledger network. We will be looking for projects that want to plan and build financial services.

This CFP will support up to 20 projects through a research, development, and planning phase. This grant opportunity covers phase one, and projects selected in this opening round will be eligible and competitive for round two.

We will begin accepting applications for the Research and Planning phase on May 17, 2022.

Project Update
The broader scholarship in anthropology has provided some context to how the socioeconomic and linguistic hierarchies in the Indian subcontinent have created access and participation barriers for many marginalized communities. Furthermore, studies also help understand more the direct impact of systemic socioeconomic privileges (or the lack of them) on the agency of such communities affected by technology. Many new and emerging technologies, such as the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), are often touted as open and distributed by design. In theory and at the outset, DLT does have the potential to promote openness and accountability from a technical standpoint. However, user sovereignty, wider access to information and fair and equitable content monetization in relation to socioeconomic dominance need further investigation. In our research, we have attempted to understand the web content ecosystem in two indigenous Adivasi languages – Ho and Santali – and how the current challenges and opportunities correspond to the future of web content monetization using DLT. It is important to note that Ho and Santali speakers have historically been oppressed in India, most notably through the Hindu caste system as it percolates through access to wealth, education and livelihoods. The affordability of smartphones and computers for creating content, the access to the internet, know-how about monetizing content, the affordability of the content users to pay for content are some of the factors we studies in our work.

Project Update
Over the course of this project we conducted technical and market research as well as talked to thought leaders and companies in different industries. What we found is that the payments and financial incentives will not only be a crucial enabler of decentralized and self-sovereign identity, but that (in many cases) they will even be (legally) necessary, such as in the context of applying decentralized identity to AML regulated industries.
In a nutshell, the insights we got from our research show that the proposed project is even more relevant than we initially thought it would be.
Progress on objectives
While the timeline between different milestones shifted a bit (e.g. we included external experts earlier than anticipated relative to other milestones such as the finalization of the architecture) and the overall deadline was extended, we completed all the milestones as proposed.

Decentralized Identity and Interledger Protocol - Explains how the Interledger Protocol can be combined with SSI (and data exchange protocols like OpenID Connect) to implement peer-to-peer data monetization; written for technical readers.

In this project we explore innovative online revenue models for creators such as journalists, artists and creators of online content. We look in particular at the revenue model of 'micro-subscriptions' (micro-subscriptions). Microsubscriptions can take different forms, but we have not yet come across an open and honest variant.

The idea of microsubscriptions is that you structurally pay a small amount to individual creatives or to a group of makers that joins forces. Think of collectives of independent artists, cultural organizations, independent broadcasters or a collective of writers that matches your interests. The organizations in such 'content collective' all receive a small part of the amount that you pay monthly via a subscription. With such collectives you can potentially reach a larger audience and ensure a structural income for makers who release work on a less frequent basis.

Part of the Prototypr GftW project is to make our platform cater for different languages and wider cultural norms in order to create a more open and inclusive web.

Despite the web being global, a huge part is tailored for English-speaking audiences – 52% of all websites are in English, and of the 4.72 billion internet users, only 25.9% are English-speaking. For educational content, this puts a lot of people at a disadvantage. Through Internationalising and localising our platform, we can improve it.

Trusting that the vision is always guided by intuition has been fruitful in my past artistic endeavors but now I see that to be true on a larger scale as my company expands. It is important to me to lead from a position of an unapologetic black perspective and I appreciate how that style of leadership influences future generations of black artists and entrepreneurs.

One of the big accomplishments during this grant period has been to offer mutual aid beyond our target goal of 10 predominately black artists to 20 artists and cultural bearers. Allowing us to build an enterprise of artistic and humanitarian ventures that can be integrated with web monetization and a diversification of sustainable practices. This is the pathway to launching our company's first website in August of 2022. Finally, after several years of planning and research, the acquisition of tools that not only allows us to increase our companies production value online but also offers significant upgrades to our capacity to produce artistic content internationally, was a huge accomplishment.

In November of 2021 Syrian dancer Karmel Suliman was reunited with his friend and mentor Ahmad Joudeh after the devastating war in their home country tore them apart.

In this interview discover how Karmel moved from Syria to Rome to follow his passion and how he hopes to one-day help rebuild his country through art and dance. It's an inspiring story and it was an honour for Ballet Rising to be there for the reunion of such courageous individuals as Karmel and Ahmad after so many years.

Gavin, a scifi author, and developer of Qwyre.com, shared his experience in developing for monetization, and offers guidance and thoughts on how to integrate the APIs into your own mobile project. Participants also learned about African science fiction, and shared a coffee during this event.

Qwyre is a collaborative publishing platform, allowing authors to earn streaming micropayments as people read their work. And we can do this because of Web Monetization.

Community Calls and Project Skill Shares are times to gather as a network and discuss trends we are seeing, plan together, and hear updates from ecosystem projects. Community member(s) design, curate, and lead the session with logistical facilitation from the Grant for the Web Program Team.

Erica Hargreave of StoryToGo.ca with the creative help of Pamela Alexander pamelajalexander.com and Briana Stuart creativelivingfordancers.com hosted an conversation that was lighthearted, relaxed and mindfully filled session.

Participants did a meditation icebreaker led by Pamela, master of mindfulness and shared insight into how we are all helping to bridge connections in the Web Monetization community. Btw meditation rocks! Erica shared an update on the Web Monetisation Libraries on StoryToGo that she set up to help to begin connecting the projects. Briana shared with us her work and the connections she’s made throughout her project.

Nic Wistreich of MOVA (Monetising Open Video Assets) hosted the last community event of the year.

During the Skill Share session, the MOVA team explained how their project links Web Monetisation with Open Video. The team also demonstrated for the first time two developments, a multi-step, multi-payee revenue sharing system and a a proposed decentralised registry of video fingerprints, matched with Payment Pointers, and other metadata such as Creative Commons license.

The Grant for the Web Program Team Chris & Erika, with help from awardees Erica Hargreave of StoryToGo and Gradual's Philo & Gunnar hosted the MozFest Edition Community Call.

This was a great opportunity to learn about the Grand MozFest Web Monetization Experiment, how to participate in the tipping beta, how you can make sure your content and projects can participate and be available for tips from MozFest Participants, and how to help advocate and talk to others about Web Monetization and your projects.

MozFest is fully virtual this year, and all ticket holders (last year there were 10,000+) will be given a free Coil account, prepopulated with $10 USD of credits that can be used to stream micropayments and to tip single amounts. Our aim is to use these peer-to-peer payments across the festival to introduce attendees to Interledger and Web Monetization technology while supporting resources benefitting the free and open web.

Coming off MozFest, GftW awardees Philo van Kemenade & Gunnar de Jong, the team behind Gradual: a tool for connected community learning hosted our March Community Call.

Gunnar and Philo introduced Gradual and shared why they believe social learning is so important in a community like ours. Earlier this month, Gradual powered a brand new Emergent Sessions track at MozFest. Gunnar and Philo also shared what they learned and experienced at MozFest.
