Web monetization on Gradual!

Hey everyone!

During our time as part of the cohort this year it has been our aim to make it easy and fun to see what feels most alive and take action on shared interests with each other. On the community hub you'll now find over 15 sessions of zoom calls, peer shares and skill shares. Based on your registered interests, we have hosted 6 unique skill sharing sessions together:

● Session on Decentralized learning at Mozfest
● Gftw - gradual community call
● Lessons Learned from past and current gftw projects
● Web Monetization earning with tutorials on gFam Learn
● Community Call around Digital Gardening
● Ways to web monetize your work: examples from the community

And this does not even include some of the other community calls that have been hosted by and for the community - you can watch the recordings back on the dedicated session pages!

 Web Monetized

One of the great things we've learned is that having your online content web monetized can act as a stimulus for sharing it with others in the community and beyond. Additionally, the ability to publish content in a web monetized space can also motivate people to produce new content in the first place.

By implementing the option of adding a custom payment pointer on individual Gradual Session pages, we will enable content creators to share their skills (e.g. in the form of a video/call recording or written post) and attract micro payments from their audience. This means that any added previous community calls will be payment pointer allocated.

 What we need from you

If you have hosted one of the sessions that is featured on our community hub, we would love for you to have your unique payment pointers allocated to the session pages so you can start generating revenue from clicks and streams!

Please forward your payment pointers to gunnar@gradu.al or leave a comment below before December 14th so we can add it to your pages. You can also decide to leave it so any incoming streams which will directly go into future development of Gradual.

Enjoy the rest of your week,
Gunnar

With gFam Learn, lessons can be visible to everyone and tips/microtransactions are provided as a bonus or lessons can be gated and unlocked by either Coil Subscribers or by a specified amount of XRP via the XUMM wallet.

Hi everyone!

As discussed earlier in the year we want to empower members in the Web Monetization community with a safe and accessible space to learn with others as we grow into a healthy, social and connected ecosystem. We have learned a lot about your interests in the last months and we've got some exciting sessions coming up!

If you haven't registered your specific interests, needs or things you would like to share yet, or if you'd simply like to add some new skills, you can join us here: gftw.gradu.al. If you scroll down you'll see it now also includes a clear overview of all of the community calls hosted so far.

Top 5 of the most popular community interests so far

 Upcoming Sessions

1. Lessons Learned from past and current gftw projects

Friday, June 10th, 2022 at 3-4 PM CET
REGISTER HERE

We would love to invite any current or past GftW grantees to share some insights on things we have learned about Web Monetization so far. Any lessons gathered out of previous cohorts or current projects are welcome so together we can figure out how best to implement web monetization into our projects!

This session will be co-hosted by Alison Guzman, Christian Dawson and Amanda Figueroa from the Curationist.
Christian will be walking us through a previous Sustainable Financing Study they did in the past and then Amanda will be helping us start to unpack all the hard questions they ended up with afterwards, about how to run a project like Curationist.org in a way that achieves real equity.

2. Web Monetization earning with tutorials on gFam Learn

Tuesday, June 21st, 2022 at 4-5 PM CET
REGISTER HERE

gFam.live aims to introduce new storytellers into the web monetization community with its social media posts, and now new functionality called gFam Learn will attempt to enable teachers to earn directly from students via web monetization and/or tips.

Adam Waring will present the gFam Learn functionality and answer any questions you might have on the processes or technology. As far as we're aware there is no capacity or platform online for teachers to earn per lesson or for students to unlock and pay for just the lessons they're interested in. With gFam Learn, lessons can be visible to everyone and tips/microtransactions are provided as a bonus or lessons can be gated and unlocked by either Coil Subscribers or by a specified amount of XRP via the XUMM wallet.

3. Ways to web monetize your work: examples from the community

Date TBD

This came up as one of the most popular potential sessions on the Gradual Community Hub so we are currently in discourse on the Interledger Slack to find a date for us to get together and have a show and tell. Join us there!

If you have an idea for a skillshare with the community or a session in any format you can now also propose them directly from the community page.

As more sessions are coming up I'll be sure to announce them with new posts. Looking forward to connecting more and helping each other out!

Insights gained from ✨1️⃣8️⃣✨ Emergent Sessions at MozFest 2022! 🌱

✨ It's Friday and we're nearing the end of MozFest 2022 - and what a week it's been! ☺️

MozFest - amongst many other things - is a fantastic place to find your people and start building momentum around your passions and your projects. It's a place just filled to the brim with the wildest innovations, inspiring ideas, stirring movements and wonderful people all convening around a single mission: a better, healthier internet.

If you've ever attended you may know that it can also be a somewhat overwhelming place. Much like the internet itself there is, well, a lot going on. And sometimes you may lose yourself a bit in all the excitement... 😅 I know I've definitely been there.

This year my intention was to have fun, to not plan anything in advance and to just see what would emerge organically.

 From Skillsharing to Emergent Sessions

Of course, there's a bit of a story there. In 2019 - I attended the Science Fair to present an idea for a communal skill sharing project that ended up becoming Gradual. The idea was simple: we put up a whiteboard with some post-its and asked people what topics they would like to

1) learn more about or
2) had something to share about.

This way - we found unique pairings of people who could meet around their common interests and exchange contact details for further engagement.

Not just that, we also allowed for instantaneous exchanges of skills and knowledge - my favorite memory here was seeing people in the hallway teaching each other how to do hand-stands!

It was such a success that we went from science fair presentation to pilot experiment of the Gradual tool and process for the following edition, which was held virtually this time.

During MozFest 2021 last year we ended up hosting 15 sessions in the two weeks of the festival: from the history and philosophy of open source to wrapping your head around NFTs and from deep listening for consensus building to building magical dinner experiences. The variety was amazing.

The idea that a fun and promising session could so easily emerge and connect people really stuck with us.

So for this year's MozFest we wanted to see how we could connect people around their common curiosity. Because sometimes, you come up with a great idea for a session during the festival.

 So what did we learn?

This week, people ended up having great ideas. For example, it was pretty clear from the get-go that there was a shared desire to help Ukrainian refugees in any capacity, so a "All Hands for Ukraine: Digital Humanitarian Session" was set up. Out of this, two follow-up sessions were born and a great resource was built for asynchronous action.

Some of my favorite other sessions include:

a 'digital potluck' around tips for healthy remote working hosted by Grant For the Web's very own Chris Lawrence

a session called "The Resilience Lab: Self and collective care in/for hard times"

a free-for-all discussion on Mycology (I have never seen so many mushroom foraging enthusiasts so happy to find their tribe)

Using Hyperaudio to increase accessibility of web-based audio and video

A casual chat hosted by Erica Hargreave around Web Monetization: How the Community is Applying This New API to Build Equity for Creators

 In conclusion

I did start this post with a title promising to share insights of the in total 18 Emergent Sessions, but writing this down I'm realizing that we're truly still in the middle of it.

Also, I'm finding it's not really about the content of the sessions. Or anything you take from it. The most important thing are the relationships, the connections you gain from sharing the things you're passionate about with the people who are interested in it, the momentum you build from working on your project in preparation for a session..

So, ask me again in a month what insights I gained from these sessions. I'll probably rave about the amazing people I met this week. 🥂

Looking forward to connecting with all of you here! 🌱

Hi there everyone! I want to take this opportunity to introduce Gradual to the community. We're a new grantee and we're setting out to initiate a journey for all of us to learn from and with each other.

In fast-moving, innovative domains - like the Web Monetization community - technical systems and the knowledge required to contribute are often so dynamic that structured learning resources aren’t widely available. We want to empower members in the Web Monetization community with a safe and accessible space to learn with others as we grow into a healthy, social and connected ecosystem!

Join us here: gftw.gradu.al

It works very simple:

You fill in what you’d like to learn or share. Anything is welcome!

See how you connect to other gftw community members via skills, interests and learning desires.

We help you set up or join a session so everyone benefits!

Over the coming months I'll be updating us on new sessions that emerge and helping you to get connected further so we all get the most out of this cohort.

Looking forward to connecting!
