Grant Opportunities

Interledger Fellowship Program

This grant program is designed for individuals working at the intersection of open payments, financial technology, and social impact. Fellows will receive $72,000, and up to $20,000 additional for project stipends, to lead a 12-month program that will advance independent research, advocacy, or technical projects. SDK Grant Program

Up to $200,000 in total funding is available to improve how developers integrate Open Payments into real-world applications. Grants ranging between $5,000 – $50,000 will support the creation of secure, production-ready SDKs that reduce complexity and accelerate adoption across platforms.

Proposal for Special Purpose Payment Account

In February 2026, the Interledger Foundation responded to the Federal Reserve’s proposal for a “special purpose Payment Account,” which could give non-banks access to core settlement services like FedNow. Designing Digital Money: A 2026 Blog Series

Where design, education, and infrastructure meet the future of money.

Welcome back to the Digital Money blog series.

In the previous series, we explored the waves of disruption and experimentation that marked the early rise of digital money. Those blogs sparked valuable insights and dialogue across the Interledger ecosystem on what resilient, inclusive, and interoperable financial systems might look like in an increasingly digital economy.

Since then, the discussion around digital money has matured.
Our ecosystem includes a wide cross-section of technologists, developers, academics and innovators who are actively shaping the foundations of tomorrow’s financial architecture. A shift in the discussion is evident and beyond what is technically possible towards deeper understanding around:

What systems are sustainable?
What designs are equitable and inclusive?
What infrastructure will remain secure and trustworthy in a rapidly digitized world?

As these questions grow more urgent, this series enters a new phase: one focused on intentional system design.

The Future of Money is Being Designed

Digital money is not emerging by chance. It is being deliberately designed, through choices about technology, governance, policy, and education. With this shift comes a new perspective. Instead of focusing only on broad industry trends, this series will explore more fundamental questions:

Where are the future architects of digital money being trained? Who will design, build, regulate, and maintain financial systems for decades to come?

Interestingly, but not unexpectedly, the answer points to: Universities.

Across the world, classrooms, research and innovation labs, and interdisciplinary programs are preparing the next generation of technologists, economists, policy specialists, and financial innovators who will shape the digital financial ecosystem. Universities are no longer just observers of digital finance, but are becoming active laboratories for the future of money where ideas are tested, talent is cultivated, and emerging norms are quietly shaped.

The New Architects of Digital Money

By focusing on universities in 2026, this blog series aims to surface an important shift. Academic institutions are rapidly becoming environments where:

Curricula are evolving to include digital finance, fintech infrastructure, and payment interoperability.
Research agendas align with real-world policy and market challenges.
Students develop interdisciplinary skills needed to build and govern digital financial systems.

Across campuses, new programs blend computer science, economics, law, public policy, and ethics. Research centers and innovation labs prototype payment systems, explore the implications of programmable money, and study how digital finance impacts communities. A new generation is emerging, in which students are being trained to become future fintech developers, payment infrastructure engineers, and regulators. Understanding where they learn, and what they learn, helps us understand how digital money itself will evolve.

Highlighting the work of universities matters because digital money is no longer purely a technical challenge. It is a societal one. The design choices made today will shape fundamental aspects of financial life for generations to come, including: privacy, access to financial services, competition in financial markets and public trust in digital systems.

Universities have a central position within this landscape as they provide:

Intellectual independence to question dominant financial models
Institutional memory to learn from past financial transformations
Educational mandates to prepare professionals capable of navigating complexity

Universities offer a rare neutral space to explore digital money without immediate pressures from profit, politics, or platform dominance. This neutrality matters.

Academic environments can bring together engineers, designers, legal scholars, social scientists, and students for shared inquiry. Together, they can ask not only whether digital money works, but also: Who benefits? Under what conditions? According to which values?

At the same time, universities are increasingly engaging with real-world financial systems. Experimentations are emerging across campuses, including digital wallets for campus ecosystems, programmable payments for research grants and scholarships, and credential-linked digital identities. These are not abstract exercises. They are hands-on experiences shaping how future generations understand and interact with digital financial systems.

Enabling Universities

The Interledger Foundation (ILF) has been working with universities and colleges around the world as they explore these questions. Through funding, experimentation, pilot programs, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the Interledger Foundation helps ensure the next generation of digital money is equipped with knowledge on interoperability, openness, financial inclusion and public interest design.

KanzuCode is building an open, instant microloans infrastructure embedded within their flagship platform, Kanzu Banking, and powered by Rafiki and the Interledger Protocol (ILP).
This solution is designed to address the persistent challenges faced by community-based savings groups such as SACCOs, VSLAs, and investment clubs. While these groups play a vital role in grassroots financial inclusion, they continue to face long loan processing times, fragmented systems, and limited access to credit when it’s needed most.
KanzuCode's aim is to provide a mobile-first, interoperable platform where SACCO members can apply for and receive microloans instantly via mobile wallets—with repayment terms tailored to their needs. By leveraging open payments technology, we are eliminating bottlenecks and enabling true financial agility for underserved communities.

Interledger Foundation Launches “Interledger on Campus” Mini-Grant Program to Support Student-Led Initiatives in Open Payments

Up to USD $5,000 grants available to university student clubs exploring open payments, digital financial access, and financial health.

Interledger on Campus is a brand new mini-grant program designed to support student-led, club-level initiatives at accredited universities around the world. The program will award up to USD $5,000 in grant funding to student organizations exploring open payments, interoperability, digital financial access, and financial health through hands-on, peer-driven activities.

Building on the Foundation’s Interledger NextGen Higher Education program, the Interledger on Campus grant program places students at the center of innovation, empowering campus clubs to design and deliver engagement activities that bring open payment concepts to life.

Chief Program Officer, Chris Lawrence, states that “student clubs are powerful engines for experimentation and leadership. Interledger on Campus is about giving students the resources and autonomy to explore how open, interoperable payment systems can expand access and inclusion, right where learning and innovation happen.”

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from March 16 through July 31, 2026, with priority review for projects planning implementation for the first half of the year. Projects are expected to run for no longer than 3 months and must be student-led, with required institutional support for fund management and project oversight.

Applicants will be required to submit a short application, including a two-page concept note, a budget and timeline document outlining key milestones, and an institutional letter of support from an accredited higher education institution confirming fund management and oversight.

New Grant Opportunities

We have three new grant opportunities opening in the next few weeks!

Interledger on Campus is a new mini-grant offering up to $5,000 to support student-led initiatives exploring Open Payments, interoperability, and digital financial inclusion at universities worldwide. This grant will open on March 16.

The Open Payments SDK grant will provide $5,000–$50,000 awards to research and improve the developer experience and make it easier for applications and e-commerce platforms to integrate Open Payments. This grant opens on April 1.

Building on the success of our six-month Ambassador Program, the expanded Interledger Fellowship will support innovators, researchers, and community leaders advancing Open Payments and digital financial access. Selected fellows will receive $72,000 over a 12-month program to pursue their projects.

Web Monetization updates Jan to Feb 2026

We’re back at the Web Monetization station, and things are taking shape nicely!

In the first 45 days of 2026, we introduced mobile compatibility for the browser extension, started building a Web Monetization e-learning course, and made improvements to reduce friction as publishers integrate Web Monetization into their digital spaces online.

Browser Extension

Market Reach

With mobile devices accounting for over 60% of traffic on the web, the first step we’ve taken has been for the browser extension to include Android support. We shipped Firefox Android compatibility in v1.1.0.

User Experience

By accelerating how quickly the extension detects a web monetized website, and reducing the size of the extension, the extension has become faster and lighter.

Publisher Tools

Reduce Integration Friction

A publisher uses one of the interactive tools, a Banner or Widget generator, to generate a script for integrating a banner or widget on their website or blog. We have added links to documentation that give context to how a script works, and additional information to guide script placement within the website’s <body>.

In-Browser Implementation

The prototype continues to take shape, and we’ve implemented configurable logic enabling users to configure delays between payments and the amount for each browser session.

Education

February welcomes us with the first Rafiki release of the year: v2.3.0-beta. This version brings us an Open Payments feature, as well as improvements for integrators.

Key highlights

Grant Spent Amounts

To simplify how Open Payments clients track their grant spending, the new Grant Spent Amounts feature allows for direct querying of grant usage. By calling GET /outgoing-payment-grant with a valid GNAP access token belonging to an approved outgoing payment grant, clients can instantly retrieve the spent totals:

Before, when an Open Payments client application wanted to show to their users how much balance a user has left within their approved grant request (or how many funds have already been debited from their account in the form of outgoing payments), they would need to do the accounting themselves. Now, they can do it through this reliable server-side request.

Support for configuring multiple routes per peer

Previously, whenever an integrator created or updated a peer in Rafiki, they could only provide a single static ILP address of the peer, effectively requiring the destination address of any routed packet to match the peer’s address prefix exactly. Now, integrators can also provide a routes field in the backend Admin API createPeer and updatePeer requests: a list of ILP addresses which determine how ILP packets are routed, even if the destination address does not match the peer's ILP addres prefix. This essentially allows fine-tuning ILP's multi-hop payment configuration.

`completeIncomingPayment` backend Admin API

This new backend Admin API mutation allows integrators to mark local incoming payments or remote incoming payments (hosted on other Open Payments resource servers) as completed through a single API request. Before, this functionality was only possible through the Open Payments API.

Multi-tenancy improvement

Another addition to the backend Admin API is the introduction of the tenant field resolver for tenanted resources. Instead of just being able to get the tenantId field when querying tenanted resources, you can also directly resolve the full tenant object within the same request.

Next up

Other than continuing with the encrypted data exchange feature, we have started the Rafiki implementation for the Open Payments directed identity feature. This feature will allow Open Payment clients to get non-interactive grants (e.g. creating incoming payments) by presenting a JWK instead of their wallet address. You can see how this behaviour will be supported by seeing the new v1.3.0 release of the Open Payments API specifications.
