MozFest is coming up quick and we want to showcase your work!

On March 8th, we're opening up the site to hundreds of MozFest attendees so that they can browse around the awesome projects you all are working on and learn more about Web Monetization.

What we need from you

We've created a MozFest tag, #mozfest, that we will use to collect and exhibit all your amazing work.

If you can please use this template to post under #mozfest, we plan on directing folks to the tag landing page so that they can read your posts, learn more about what you and your team has been up to in the Web Monetization space, and potentially even demo what you've been working on.

How this will work

We’re creating a "Welcome MozFest" landing page that will be shared throughout the festival to give people new to Web Monetization context and an overview about our community. Lots of these folks are open web enthusiasts but not all are familiar with Web Monetization and your projects, so we hope to educate them about the possibilities and creative potential there is for Web Monetization.

This is where you all come in! From the welcome page, we'll point folks to the #mozfest tag where they can then browse through your projects and learn more about how Web Monetization works.

Final Notes

We really need your help making this space as fun, engaging, and informative as possible! Please write a post using this template and post under the MozFest tag before March 7th. It's absolutely fine to include any other relevant hashtags, but be sure to include #mozfest.

Understanding How User Feeds Work on the Web Monetization Community

Our Web Monetization Community has been steadily on the rise, and with more folks joining up, we thought it might be helpful to discuss a bit about how the user feed works in more detail.

When talking about the user feed, we generally mean the feed that appears on the homepage when clicking on the feed tab. That said, we also often include the other tabs — latest, week, month, etc. — when discussing how it functions.

Here's what the feed looks like:

For Readers

It's important to understand that this feed is generally tailored to you based upon your interests, i.e. what you're following! You can follow tags, users, and organizations by clicking the follow button found within in most articles. This will make whatever you're following more likely to show up in your feed.

You can further customize the "weight" of each tag you're following via your user dashboard. This is super helpful if you really want to follow something important like #announcements and potentially care less about something like #getstarted.

For Content Creators

Rule number one is just to do what you do naturally! Don't get caught up in trying to game the feed by mistagging your posts with popular tags or try and get views via clickbait titles. You'll make no friends doing this! 😅

That said, it is good to be aware of the most popular tags, so that you might be able to craft content that tailors to them. You can look at /tags to get a sense of the most popular tags.

Another notable tip is that if you don't set a custom cover image for your article, it will not appear in the top slot view of the feed. In order for a post to appear at the top of a feed, it must have a cover image set — this is even true of /latest.

A Bit of Mystery

Without revealing all of the details behind the way the feed works, we'll note that popularity and newness also factor into how likely you are to be recommended something in the main feed.

Similarly, if we think that something is conduct-breaking — see our Code of Conduct — too advertorial, or just a partial post that links to read content elsewhere, there is a good chance that we will act to reduce the visibility of the post. We only want to highlight the best content and will take liberty to manipulate a post to be less visible if it doesn't jive with our editorial standards. Speaking of, if you find a post that doesn't meet our standards, please report it here.

Walkthrough for Posting a Series (Part Two)

So, you've learned the basics of how to create a series. 🙌

Now let's get into the nitty gritty and talk about some of the lesser known quirks of series.

Series Gotchas!

There are a handful of quirks to series that aren't immediately obvious at first.

1. Your series won't show up as a series until more than one post have been posted under it!

It's as simple as it sounds. The first post in a series doesn't appear to be part of a series until the second post in the series is posted.

This may change down the line, but this is how series operate for now.

2. You cannot co-write a series of posts with another user.

At the moment, you cannot write in the same series as another member, even if they are in the same org as you.

There's a request here to allow folks to write in the same series, but this isn't available yet.

Walkthrough for Posting a Series (Part One)

So, you want to post a series?

Perhaps you've already written a couple of posts in a series but weren't aware that there was a way to formally link them together, or maybe this is your first post in a brand new series and you want to make sure that the next one up is clearly linked to it. Either way, we got you covered here! 😀

Just follow these steps...

First, check out which editor version you're using from settings > customization — just scroll down to the heading "Writing" and look to see if it says "basic markdown" or "rich + markdown".

If "basic markdown"...

You need to add a line in the front matter that specifies your post is part of a series and then give the series a title, like so:

If "rich + markdown"...

You must click on the gear icon at the bottom of the screen beside "Save draft" and then input your series into the available box.

Walkthrough for Setting Up Organizations

So, you've created or joined an organization as an admin. What do you need to do in order to set things up? How do you invite other members?

Don't worry we've got you covered with this walkthrough!

Need to Create an Org?

Navigate to your org settings page.
Make sure the drop down at the top of the page is set to "Settings for New Organization"
Follow the various prompts top set up your organization and save.
Check out the guides below to set up your org further.

Inviting Members to Your Org

Go to your org settings page.
Use the drop-down menu to select the org you'd like to invite new members to.
You’ll see an invite token at the top of the page. To add someone to your organization, simply provide them with that token and instruct them to enter it at the top of the same page to join the org.

Note that when you invite a user to join an org, by default they'll be given a member role. If you want to make them an admin, they'll first need to join the org, then you can navigate back to your org settings page, and adjust their role from there.

Adjusting Org Details

You'll need an admin role to adjust org details.
Go to your org settings page.
Use the drop-down menu to select the org you'd like to adjust the settings for.
Most of the settings should be pretty self-explanatory, but there are a few potential gotchas to keep in mind:
- You don't need to input a URL for your Twitter or GitHub usernames — just your username. Also, no need to include @ when providing your Twitter username.
- The logo for light themes should be dark in color and the logo for dark themes should be light in color. We adjust the logo depending on what UX theme (e.g. Night Theme) the user has chosen.
- Tag line is a short line that will appear under your org's name on your org landing page.
We highly recommend setting up the Call-to-action box for your org as this appears on every post you share under the org.

Go Post Under Your Org!

Now that you're all set up, consider posting an article under your org.

How to Post an Article

Note that we have 2 editor versions — "Basic markdown" & "Rich + Markdown" – that you can choose from here in your settings. They both offer the same features but the layout is slightly different between the two. Please check out both to see which editor version you'd prefer.

Follow the instructions below to post your first article.

0. Sign Up

If you don't already have an account, you'll need one to post an article. Join us!

1. Click "Write a Post"

Once you sign in, there will be a big button in the upper right corner that says "Write a Post" - click it!

2. Pick a Good, Descriptive Title

Most of the time, people will notice your title first and will often decide whether or not to read based just on that. So make that first impression a good one! Tell the readers exactly what they will get from the post, and then deliver on that promise. While it's nice to be catchy, it's often best to be direct and clear.

3. Add Some Tags

Tags are super important! Users can follow tags based on their interest, so appropriately tagging your posts will get your posts in the feeds of the correct people (who actually want to read that content!)

4. (Optional) Choose a Cover Image

Click on the add a cover images button in the post editor to open the image adding dialog, then choose a file to upload as your cover image. Cover images give visual interest to your post, plus they show up on Twitter if someone tweets out a link to your post!

5. Write Your Post!

Now we're getting somewhere...

You can write your post directly in the editor and even save a draft if you need a break and would like to continue writing later. Just click the Save draft button (or Save changes) at the bottom of the page.

Also, if you need help with formatting, look to the righthand side of the editor for the header "Editor Basics" which provides some guidelines on using Markdown, Liquid tags, and other features.

7. Add Images in the Body of a Post

You'll see an Upload image button near the top of the page which you can use to upload image files. After choosing your image wait a second for it to upload.

Once it's done, there will be a markdown snippet with a link to your uploaded image. Copy that, and paste it right into the editor! Change the alt text (inside the square brackets) to something descriptive, and you're good to go.

8. Review Your Post in Preview Mode

Once you're done with a post, we'd recommend reading through the post at least once in "Preview" mode before publishing.

Click Preview at the bottom of your screen to see the formatted post.

9. Hoping to Post under an Org?

Look at the very top of the page for "Write a new post" and you'll see a dropdown that defaults to Personal. Just change this to whatever org you'd like to post under if applicable. If you don't want to post under an org, just leave it be.

10. Publish!

Once finished, you can publish your post!

If using the "Basic markdown" editor, you'll need to change the Front Matter so that published: false reads published: true.

If using the "Rich + markdown" editor then you'll just click the Publish button at the bottom of the page.

Need to Make an Edit?

No worries, you can always easily access all of your articles from your user dashboard to edit your posts if necessary.

To unpublish a post, you need to click to edit it and click the gear icon beside Save changes to find the Unpublish post button. Or, if you're using the "Basic markdown" editor, you'll simply change the Front Matter so that published: true reads published: false.

Step 3: A Web Monetization Community staff member will add you to your project page within 1 business day and let you know by responding to your message.
