AI art stuff.

You might have heard of all the AI art generators going around. Maybe you have tried them yourself. You might be interested to know that a group of passionate people hate them, artists.

There are two main reasons they hate AI. One is that AI training data(artworks) are mostly copyrighted content. When somebody creates art, it automatically has a copyright. To use art commercially, the artist actively permits by using tools like CC. Most artists, as far as I know, don't do this.

AI developers scrape art all around the web without regard for copyright. AI itself is not a problem, it is interesting in my opinion. But the unethical way that it's trained leaves a bitter taste. One analogy I came around to is comparing it to a chef. A robot learns to make dishes by eating the chefs' yummy food while the chefs don't get individual credit or compensation for their work. It is happening to artists.

Deviantart is a platform for artists to share art. Recently, they released an AI art generator likely trained with their user's artwork. A huge offense and they got the backlash of the same degree for it. A similar platform with a focus on professional work also got some backlash, Artstation. They didn't release an AI product (yet), but it started featuring AI-generated art on the front page. It is the other reason artists hate AI.

The nature of AI generators is that they are fast. They can spit out half-finished images in minutes. Humans can do the same in an hour or more. Artists use these art platforms to showcase their skills. "Competing" with AI defeats the purpose. They want Artstation to prevent this so AI images won't flood the timeline and make it harder for potential clients to find real artists. Artstation stayed neutral hence the backlash. People are starting to leave the platform.

I know this community isn't about art, but I just wanted to say all these for context. There is an opportunity to explore web monetization to solve some of these problems.

Can it prevent bots from scraping art from centralized art platforms?

Artists are leaving mainstream platforms, with their fans wanting to see their art. Could it be enough motivation for them to adopt web monetization?

Just sharing because it's getting weird in the art world, and I hope web monetization could be part of the solution.

Any ideas? xD

could a custom license be used on creative work that's basically CC with one additional condition:

payment pointer of the creator must be used with x% revshare?

something I'm thinking about...

wips.art — Grant Report #2

We wanted to create a platform for visual artists to share wips (work in progress). Most platforms, including those designed for artists, are focused on the "final" work. Though you can share wips with them, they are not designed for it. One day an artist might want to share a wip for an illustration, the next day a wip for a different illustration and so on. This makes for a very messy instagram profile.

A better platform for sharing wips is needed and so we built it. On https://wips.art/ it’s easy for artists to share wips in context, making their profile understandable for new fans. The platform also gives them the ability to monetize their work with Web Monetization!

https://wips.art/post/ahMKIYMLNoeYVnhxUDtF

 Project Update

We’re using the second half of the grant period for gathering feedback from users and creating initial content. We commissioned several artists to create personal, meaningful illustrations for the website. This was a huge win! A number of amazing artists posted their wips on wips.art as they made progress. We, the founders, also shared our art on the site which you can check out yourself!

Each artist has a different process, and our website format highlights how much time and care goes into each stage of the artistic process. We are proud of what we have achieved and hope other artists love it too! Too often, art is seen as this magical, unachievable talent, but in reality a lot of critical thinking, problem solving, and hard work happens behind the scenes of the artistic process. Our goal for the site is to showcase the effort and time that it takes to take a piece of art from an idea to final completion.

We also planned to track artist WM earnings but we are not able to do that yet since there aren’t many WM viewers. Our target users are artists and are not in the Web Monetization ecosystem yet. The initial content is to attract more artists and we are still in the process of doing that.

Here are some posts on wips.art!

These are the sketches, find out how they currently look by clicking on the link!

https://wips.art/post/QtjEvFGGqxQ0eFl1WR6p

 Progress on objectives

The plan was to track our artists’ earnings by having them use a payment pointer we provide for a duration. But since we don’t have many users, we can’t do that yet. When there are a good number of users, we can start to have founding artists create monetized posts using their assigned payment pointer and subscribe to coil as well. They can change their payment pointers after a month of tracking their earnings.

We are in the process of asking feedback from the users about how they are experiencing the website. Wips.art is far from finished and we plan to continue building it with the community of artist. We have no experience building a community and it is challenging to get people excited as we are on what we’re building. It gets even more challenging when we explain Web Monetization and it’s potential benefits.

The advantages are not very clear when compared to patreon. People don’t gaze at art for hours, so it’s better for artists to sell access to content via websites like Patreon versus charging for the time spent looking at it. With wips.art, we are selling the process of the art but we can’t do that without giving access to the art! To attract users, we need more interesting features that’s only available to coil subscribers. This way the selling point is the features around art and not the art itself. We need to position and brand wips.art better.

 Key activities

Our key activity has been sharing wips.art to art discord servers. We make art then share them to the communities we are in and somehow have our project link be visible. We don’t spam since we are part of those communities as artists and we don’t want to get banned! There’s only two of us doing this so it has been a slow process.

here's one person reacting to me sharing the project xD

this is an online art friend :)

It’s hard to track how many have seen our project, but there are currently 10 unique signups and 5 who have posted. 4 of which are the artists we commissioned. We are off our goal of 50 artists actively posting. We didn’t imagine it would be so challenging to achieve that. At the time of writing the goal, 50 seemed like a really low number.

 Communications and marketing

As discussed before, we are sharing our project to art discord servers. We are not using ads yet but we might be right after the grant period. We want to get users organically but maybe ads would be good to start. We will need more content on the website before we do that so we are not showing people an empty website.

Commissioning artists is part of our content creation. We commissioned yuming, leondraws, karun_noru, and arimir. Only yuming’s post is monetized for now, since we don’t have enough content for visitors to enjoy yet. We will encourage them to create monetized posts when we have a good amount of free content.

 What’s next?

We plan to keep building and sharing the platform with our peers, creating art and posting progress on wips.art. We want to explore what other features could be built using web monetization. Polish the functionality and focus more on the design more because currently it's very basic. We might need to hire a UI/UX designer to help.

We also need to figure out how to get more users. Artists want eyes on their work so posting on wips.art doesn’t make much sense yet since not a lot of people will see them. It’s not a unique problem, all social media platforms always start from 0 users. So we will learn from successful platforms how they did it.

For the next grant opportunity, here are some of our ideas:

organize a contest and have artists post their wips on wips.art, requiring participants to monetize their posts

create art educational videos/content and a different section on the website for them to be available for Web Monetized users

implement a 'critique' feature where artists could have their work critiqued by peers. This would make the website more collaborative and perfect use case for revenue sharing

What community support would benefit your project?

We need help with creating community and/or marketing to have more users. If you have resources that helped you with branding, it would be great if you could share it with us! Thanks!

Please do explore https://wips.art/ and give us feedback on whatever you think could be better!

 Additional comments

There is a known bug, which we caught early thanks to one of our founding artists, yuming. Monetized posts are not working as expected. When showing the later updates, it repeats the second update.

We are trying to implement exclusive content with payment verification within wips.art because we want our users' content to be secure. The "post" feature is where a good amount of the development time has been spent and it still needs more work.

A Web Monetized art platform where artists share their work in progress (wips) in a post. If they choose to monetize a post, only webmonetized users can view all updates.

Check it out and see amazing art!
https://wips.art/

this is my own sample post: https://wips.art/post/RGvnZPkQH9PXd2ZEuClG

The project is by no means a finished product. It is only a prototype/proof of concept to find out if art and web monetization is a good fit. Would it be a good way for visual artists to monetize their work?

How do you introduce web monetization to new people?

You want to introduce someone to web monetization. First you try to explain what it is... then they want to use it so they can understand it better.

You tell them to subscribe on coil.com, but they are not comfortable giving coil their card info since they don't know what it is.

What do you do? Or what's a better (easy and/or least effort) way to let them try web monetization?

How do you currently introduce people to web monetization?

wips.art — Grant Report #1

 Project Update

We have the minimum viable product of the webapp. It still needs some polishing but it is at a useable state. We don't think it's quite ready for the public though. There's a lot of bugs that need to be fixed before it's good enough for the world to see.

The most challenging part of the project for us is to come up with features that would be different from other social/art platforms.

 features

 post

We came up with an interesting post structure where artists can post incremental updates. A post is where they log the progress of their art and they can make as many updates as they want, for now. We need to assess if that's sustainable for the platform.

 monetization

Artists could monetize a post. When a post is monetized, viewers will need to have webmonetization enabled to be able to view the whole post. If not, they could only see the initial update.

 (revenue share)

We also plan to add a feature where the post author could select a few comment authors to share the revenue of the post. We think this feature could encourage a friendly and helpful comment section.

 Progress on objectives

Notion doc with relevant files

We are on track with our objectives. The core features are built, and the next step is to get feedback from a handful of users. We plan to do this in October, periodically try to get feedback as we build and polish features.

 Key activities

We have a lot of back and forth feedback on the main features of the platform and how it should feel like. We use figma to create a mockup of our ideas before it gets built.

After building a feature, we test it among us and see if it feels good. etc.

 Communications and marketing

We are not actively talking about the project publicly yet. Since we don't have anything to show yet. But for the next half of the grant period, we might be writing about it publicly.

We say 'might' because we think it's better to share it with our artist friends first. We want to make sure that it is good enough for release, and catch bugs we missed during the first 3 months of development.

 What’s next?

In the second half of the grant period, we will start to share the project privately with art friends for feedback. We might also commission some of them to create art to exclusively post on the project to see how they like it if they are FORCED use it lol. Everything will be documented.

What community support would benefit your project?

One of the goals of this project is to know whether or not webmonetization could be a good income stream for artists (visual artists in our case). If anyone in the community has written about its profitability, we would like to read it.

If you have art friends who would be interested in this project, let them know!

At the development side, we would like to run our own receipt verifier. If somebody is successful at running this repo we would like some pointers xD

 Additional comments

thanks for reading our lil update. like and subscribe xD

How to can I do 'exclusive content generation' on our webapp?

I guess this is a question for @wilsonianb since I saw that you contributed to the exclusive content generator. It's very cool!

Is there a way to add it on our project? I want our users to create posts as they do and not go to another website to make their content secure. I was thinking of just copying your code from github?? Idk if that's allowed or how do I give credit...

Thanks!

I wonder how much time people spend looking at art online. Especially on social media. For me, on Instagram I scroll through a bunch of art in minutes, maybe just a few seconds for each.

Do you spend time looking at art? If at all?

Trying out receipt verifier service.

The tutorial is really helpful! As I finished it, I realized that the event listener is firing so often and hitting my backend at least every second.

Is this the accepted standard? It doesn't feel right. My expectation is that I will check if one transaction is good, then I would assume all other transactions can also be trusted. Is this a bad strategy?

If you have more knowledge on this. Please do comment. Thanks!

I decided to spend less time on social media a couple of weeks ago, but I still wanted people to see my sketches. So I create a webpage that is updated as soon as I post some sketches in my private discord server.

If you wanna try, it's xanderjakeq.page/sketches.

Suggestions/constructive feedback appreciated. :)
