Notes, Recording and Podcast

For those new to our community, ILF stands for Interledger Foundation. We are a community of technologists, digital creatives, researchers, entrepreneurs, and educators working to build new pathways to financial inclusion and equity through digital transactions.

Interledger Summit:

The Interledger Foundation's November 13 meeting highlighted the success of the recent Interledger Week in Cape Town. This was our most-attended summit ever yet, featuring participants from around the world and significant local participation. We had a few speakers who shared their experiences. Here’s a glimpse of the discussions:

Sheena Allen and Victoria Coker led the session ‘Unbanked in America: Exploring the Financial Divide’ at the Summit and brought fresh insights. The focus on banking deserts was particularly resonant, drawing parallels across continents.

  • “Banking deserts aren’t just an American problem; the term is now helping others articulate their realities globally.”
  • Did you know Mississippi has no Bank of America branches? This stark reality highlights the global challenge of financial inclusion.
  • “5.9 million people in America remain unbanked—a stark reminder of the work ahead.”

Stay tuned for the Future Money podcast and updates on the Unbanked in America documentary. These initiatives aim to keep the conversation going and expand awareness.

Benjamin Bellamy of Castapod shared:

  • “We’re at the beginning of a new era...a sustainable and fair ecosystem where creators can thrive independently.”
  • “Imagine paying for premium podcast content without sharing your email address—just listen, pay, and support creators.”
  • “With Interledger, we’re bringing back the decentralized, choice-driven internet many of us remember from the 90s.”

This year, we focused on fostering dialogue around local issues with global relevance. Our African Parlamantarion panel led by Ayden Ferdeline, “Parliamentarian Perspectives: Fostering Inclusive Open Payments in Africa,” best exemplified this. The feedback from African parliamentarians was overwhelmingly positive, emphasizing the value of multi-stakeholder dialogue in addressing local issues with global solutions.

  • “By inviting lawmakers to the table early, we ensure the technologies we develop are technically sound, equitable, and accessible to those who need them most.” - Ayden.
