Brief Project Description
Bridgy Fed is an infrastructure service that bridges ActivityPub, ATProto, and the web. The project was to bridge Web Monetization over Bridgy Fed so users on one side of the ecosystem could handle payments from the other.
Project Update
Over the last few months, we've completed our deliverables. We had two main goals:
1. Introduce a Web Monetization Lexicon for the ATmosphere (ATProto ecosystem standard)
We partnered with the Lexicon Community to develop the ATProto standard, and the finalized shared lexicon is documented here.
2. Bridge Web Monetization between ActivityPub and ATProto
The Bridgy Fed integration can be found here.
Project Impact & Target Audience(s)
Our target audience is ActivityPub instance owners and ATProto platform developers who wish to include payments via the Web Monetization standard. Users or platform admins can bridge accounts over Bridgy Fed and expect platforms in the other ecosystem who also support Web Monetization to handle payments as if they were native.
On the ATProto side, we've already seen the at://work professional social platform adopt the new Web Monetization lexicon we helped standardize. We're hoping to see more developers in either ecosystem take advantage of this new functionality.
Progress on Objectives, Key Activities
As mentioned above, we've completed all of our tasks for Web Monetization integration into Bridgy Fed.
Communications and Marketing
We've been promoting this at conferences and in discussions with our various partners. This led to the at://work integration, along with some ActivityPub developers who have started working on Web Monetization integration. We'll hopefully have more platforms to share soon.
Whatβs Next?
We'll continue evangelizing this integration wherever we can and will be testing with developers who adopt it.
Community Support
We'd love to chat with other developers who are already integrating Web Monetization so we can test across ecosystems. Our goal is to have as many cross-network demos as possible to share with our users.
We're also a non-profit run by two full-time volunteers and three volunteer board of directors. Any donations to our Patreon or merch purchases would help sustain this project.
