Takunda Chirema — Travel Grant Report

Image (optional)

Introduction

Hello, I'm Takunda Chirema and I received a travel grant to the ILP Summit 2022 in New Orleans, Louisiana. I work at the UCT (University of Cape Town) Financial Innovation Hub which seeks to turn research in blockchain and financial services into viable businesses. I have a startup called Axone, which is a platform to collaboratively author written work. For the POC Axone used Web Monetization for streaming payments to authors. I was interested to know how Axone can become a web monetization provider to enable more features for creator rewards.

Key highlights about your participation at the Summit

I was keen to know more about Rafiki which was presented on the first day by Sabine and I learnt a lot from it and the demo. The Revenue Sharing Language (RSL) presentation by Nic was particularly of interest to me as well because of the collaboration aspect of Axone.

Highlight your key takeaways from the Summit

From the first day presentations I learnt that Rafiki and TigerBeetle are tools and services for easier integration into the interledger ecosystem. Rafiki is an open source package that can be used by wallet providers to offer inteledger functionality to their users. It is the intermediary that will communicate with other ILP nodes instead of the wallet building this infrastructure themselves. Rafiki uses TigerBeetle, an accounting database capable of processing a million transactions per second. Arunjay and Michael presented on the steps being done to achieve interoperability between individual payment services including Mojaloop which is a reference model to achieve this.

What have you done post-Summit to showcase your participation in the Summit?

It was a great opportunity attending the ILP summit. I did a presentation of Chimoney at the hub because I liked the idea of using loyalty points as a form of currency. It's ideas like these that broaden our thoughts, creativity and innovation.

Any next steps and/or leads emanating from your participation at the Summit?

The really enjoyed the summit. From the presentations to the creative, innovative and brilliant people I met. I would like to see how I can possibly use RSL and Rafiki in the near future for my project.

Thank you for the opportunity to attend the summit!
