Rafiki Remit: Advancing Seamless Remittances in Pakistan

Image description
We are thrilled to kick off our journey with the Interledger Foundation and share the story behind "Rafiki Remit" — a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming cross-border remittances in Pakistan. At the heart of this project is Paysys Labs, a leading digital financial services company based in Pakistan.

About Paysys Labs

Founded in 2016, Paysys Labs is a leading provider of digital financial services. Over the years, we've become a trusted partner in the fintech ecosystem by delivering secure, scalable, and innovative financial technology solutions.

Our work centers on creating seamless digital experiences that enhance customer access to financial products and services. We're committed to financial inclusion and digital transformation.

The Opportunity with Interledger

When we learned about the opportunity to apply for a grant from the Interledger Foundation, we saw it as a perfect fit. The remittance landscape in Pakistan presents a critical challenge. Despite being one of the top remittance-receiving countries globally, the current systems are often slow, costly, and inefficient—especially for the end beneficiaries.

Our vision was to tackle this issue by bringing the Interledger Protocol to Pakistan and building real-world use cases that make cross-border payments as easy as an email.

Rafiki Remit: The Project

With the support of the Interledger Foundation, we starter Rafiki Remit Project, and development is now underway.

We are working closely with Allied Bank Limited — one of the largest and most tech-forward banks in Pakistan as our pilot partner. The project’s aim is to integrate Rafiki, an ILP connector, with ABL’s core banking system using our in-house Open Connect Middleware.

This integration will enable ABL to operate as a node on the ILP test network, allowing customer accounts to act as digital wallets capable of receiving international payments from ILP-connected institutions.

Key Objectives
✅ Enable Allied Bank Limited to become Pakistan’s first ILP-enabled bank
âś… Allow ABL consumer accounts to function as ILP payment addresses
âś… Enhance financial inclusion through low-cost, direct digital transfers
âś… Lay the groundwork for expanding ILP adoption across more banks in Pakistan.

What’s Ahead

We’re currently in the early phases of development and integration, working closely with ABL’s teams to connect their systems with ILP infrastructure. Once we validate this initial use case, our goal is to onboard more banks and fintech partners, building toward a national ecosystem of interoperable remittance channels powered by Interledger.

We strongly believe in the ILF vision to “send money like email,” and we’re excited to contribute to making that vision a reality in Pakistan.

This is just the beginning, and we look forward to sharing our progress with the Interledger community as Rafiki Remit evolves.

Stay tuned, and let’s build an open financial future together.
