A Super Sized Weekly Round-Up Post!

Alt text of image

It's hard to believe that we have Grant for the Web projects wrapping up, but we do! This week's Round-Up will feature many project final reports and is a Super Sized Edition because we were out last week. Enjoy!

The W3C & GftW

Dominique Hazael-Massieux from grantee/partner the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) posts about the work we are doing together (Pro Tip: Future grant applicants should read this post carefully!) The W3C team has been invaluable in helping to insure that we are building a program that is grounded in open web design principles. #amustread

Widget, a funny website

We start our run of final reports with Sam from Widget. Sam does a fantastic job talking about their wins and struggles. We are proud of funding them to create their Equity and Diversity Guidelines for Comedy Publishing. We would love to see them talk more about this by doing a WM Community Skill Share!

Mindful tips from Pamela!

This isn't a full final report, but its an impressive update none the less. We love how Pamela Alexander overcame set backs and adopted a true Do It Yourself (DIY!) attitude. Now I am off to sign-up for her course...

Plugins FTW!

We are blown away by what our Spark grantees have been able to accomplish with small grant awards, and what Miles DeWitt was able to accomplish here is another fine example. PeerTube is a free and open-source, decentralized, federated video platform powered by ActivityPub and WebTorrent, that uses peer-to-peer technology to reduce load on individual servers when viewing videos. Miles has created a plugin to Web Monetize videos on the platform. We see lots of potential in this approach to help spread WM into existing platforms and tools. Great work Miles!

Woof! Akita comes to a close

Let me just say a full throated and hearty Thank You! to Sharon and Elliot who have been helpful, engaged and talented WM community members. In the early stages of any community project you need people like Elliot and Sharon to be catalysts and leaders. And their projects and work is creative and essential. Given all that, this is a textbook example of an awesome final report and those of you who still need to write one should take note!

New technology for social impact

At the beginning of all big ideas, you need people willing to research, dream, build and yes, struggle. The team behind this project did all those things. Their work and ideas, even the ones not quite possible yet, are a blueprint for how social impact projects might start thinking about the big ideas Web Monetization and the Interledger Protocol can power.

Forecasting the future with Metaculus

This is a fascinating project, and while the technology isn't quite there (yet!) to do their original idea of bounties, they had a smart pivot to using payment pointers to raise money for causes they are collecting forecasts about. We appreciate Gaia and team's ability to adapt. And we suspect that when (not if!) the tech can do single payments they will be ready to implement!

Web Monetization in the 3D Web!

The team at the Emblematic Group used their grant funds to build out browser based 3D/virtual world software that doesn't need the creator to use code to produce. And it has Web Monetization capabilities built in. It isn't quite ready for use, but check out their report to get updates. We can't wait to play with this.

Speaking of Web Monetization in virtual worlds...

What was the famous line from War Games, "Want to play a game?" While they might not have been trying to stave of nuclear armageddon the Immers Space crew have come up with a super cool proof of concept for Web Monetization in VR. Virtual Reign is an immersive social chess game, but it represents more than just that, as they detail in their report. So read the report, and then play the game! (with WM turned on for bonus scenes!)

Projects in progress #1

Nika from the IGDA Foundation shares their first report. We are proud to be supporting diverse game developers and academics from across the globe. What an impressive set of developers, researchers, designers and students! Stay tuned for more showcases and share-outs for this work.

Projects in progress #2

Another project that had to be creative in adjusting their project mid-stream, which turned to unearth some new and fruitful ways forward. We love the way they are thinking about all aspects of the ecosystem and how they are interconnected. From access, to equity to creativity to an understanding of local realities this is thoughtful work. Once this system is up and running it will be an example to us all about building in WM holistically.

Projects in progress #3

This is our biggest project to date, and could be the kind of work that has a gravitational pull in the WM ecosystem. I encourage all of you to follow this work by Sam & Dave, but especially those of you in the Journalism space. Here Dave goes into detail about how they got past some issues dealing with digital wallets and their plans for a first pilot.

Projects kicking off

OK, so Gavin Chait is already off to the races with this "Roll Your Own" e-book publishing platform. Amazing stuff, excited where this goes.
